Contrast occurs when two elements are different. The greater the difference the greater the contrast. If you have two colors that are to close in color, then you will not be able to read it. So then you would have bad contrast. But contrast doesn’t only occur with color choice. It can also be with different sizes of things. For instance, lets say you have a nice big bold font on the top of your page, and a small tagline under that, well that’s ok. But where the bad contrast comes in is when you keep adding different size fonts all over your page. With all these different size fonts everywhere, I wouldn’t know where to begin reading, I would give up. Below I added THE GOOD, THE BAD, and the UGLY by using color.
THE GOOD
This is good because you can instantly read what I want you to read. The contrast I did here makes the center text stand out. I also added a border of text around my picture here, you can read it easily, and most likely you wouldn’t read it first. To me, these two colors work well, I use these colors a lot.
THE BAD
This is bad because the colors chosen here really make it hard to read. Choosing these two colors is never a good idea. Doesn’t really hurt my eyes to look at it, but I really have to focus to even begin to read it.
THE UGLY
This is HORRIBLE.. Never do this. NEVER.. lol. This is a rookie mistake. A lot of beginner designers will want to use this because they think it is eye popping and will draw a crowd. It definitely is eye popping, but not in a good way, hurts my eyes to even type this with the image below. Using red and this blue together is always a bad idea.
